Music in the Mountains
Celebrating 23 years of classical music in the San Juan Mountains, Music in the Mountains bring world-famous performers, and up and comers, to Durango for a three week festival featuring events at Durango Mountain Resort and in the town. Each year Durango Mountain Resort and Music in the Mountains host the fan favorite Pop’s Night, with themes ranging from Big Band to Broadway. Family, Children and free concerts are also part of the event, introducing youth to the wonders of classical music. Durango Independent Film Festival
Durango’s long-standing film festival received a face-lift in 2007, and the festivals future continues to look bright. Local theaters around town screened more than 200 films during the weeklong festival, ranging from independent films to children’s films. Applications are being accepted for 2008 films and more information about the festival is available at www.durangofilm.org.
Live Music and Clubs
Durango is home to some of the best entertainment venues around and each year attracts bands from the Four Corners region and beyond. Live music is performed in town at the Abbey Theater, as well as in numerous local clubs and bars. At the Community Concert Hall, located on Fort Lewis’ campus, bands, symphonies, ballets and lecturers grace the stage. There is always a concert swinging, a movie playing, or something to do in and around Durango.
Art
Durango is unquestionably the art center for Southwestern Colorado, offering the Durango Arts Center and nearly 20 galleries around town.
Sports/Recreation
Community Recreation Center
A great place for families to play after the slopes, they feature a gym, lap pool, leisure pool, indoor track, racquetball, fitness equipment, game room, and baby-sitting.
Durango Sports Club
A full service health club including a swimming pool.
Chapman Hill
Chapman Hill is a small, in-town skate facility. During the winter, a refrigerated rink provides excellent ice skating. Skating lessons and leagues are offered year-round.
